Praxis Requirements

In order to be fully admitted into the program, candidates must take and pass the Praxis Examination, a credentialing test administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Though the Praxis Series exam (Praxis I and Praxis II) is not a part of our application process, candidates are required to pass all portions of both exams before receiving full admission into our Summer or Winter programs.

All candidates are required to take and pass all three sections (reading, writing, and math) of the Praxis I prior to the start of Training Institute. The Praxis I is administered on a rolling basis and the computer-based version can be taken anytime during the year. For the Praxis I, we strongly encourage applicants to register to take the computer-based version of this exam covering all three sections (code 5750) as soon as possible, but prior to March 31, 2012. Be aware that it is not possible to take the Praxis I and the Praxis II exams on the same date. For this reason, we strongly encourage candidates to take the Praxis I as soon as possible.

For the Praxis II, candidates must take and pass the required exams specified for their assigned subject area (see chart below) prior to the start of Training Institute. Since the Praxis II paper-based tests are given only on a limited basis throughout the year, it is important for you to plan accordingly since you may not pass on your first attempt. Since the April test date is the last possible date to take and pass the Praxis II exams to be eligible for the Summer 2012 cohort, you may need to register for tests before you know your status with the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows.

PLEASE NOTE: Fellows assigned to Special Education are required to pass three Praxis II exams, as specified in the chart below, in order to be considered highly qualified in Pennsylvania. ETS, the administrator of the Praxis exams, does not allow more than two tests to be taken on a given test date. Therefore, Special Education candidates will need to register for two different test dates to take all three tests. In order to be eligible for the Summer 2012 cohort, you must take and pass at least one required Praxis II test by the March test.  For this reason, we strongly encourage Special Education candidates to take at least one Praxis II as soon as possible, which may mean prior to knowing your status with the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows.

All candidates should have their scores sent to the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows directly. Our recipient code is 2670. If you take your Praxis tests in Pennsylvania, your scores will automatically be sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Education. However, if you take your Praxis tests out of state, you will have to make sure that you specify the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a score recipient during the test registration process.

Overviews of the Praxis exams are provided on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website. Placement as a teacher in SDP and continued enrollment in the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows program is contingent upon passing scores on all required Praxis tests. Registration for the Praxis Series exams is handled through the Education Testing Service (ETS). For more information and to register, please visit the ETS site.
